  • From Steamdrivenandy on Engine problem: Lack of power, stalling etc

    Hi Ryan,
Glad you fixed the prob. My Innovation was already starting to suffer EGR issues just before we changed van (can’t remember the mileage must’ve been circa 15K or so). Had to call out the RAC to a site near Salisbury because she ran rough and lost power just after reversing off the height blocks and chucked out oodles of black smoke. The RAC guy just gave the EGR a swift clunk with a heavy metal object and all was fine, until it happened again a few weeks later at home. But then I knew what to do.

Still miss the Innovation and often wish we’d still got her.

    Andy

  • From David on Tip: Our guide for easy free Internet Access abroad

In Germany I’m using a 3G dongle from T-Mobile. It’s not too expensive; €5 per day for just under 2Mbit/s with HSDPA. Faster than most wi-fi spots and definitely cheaper than paying for BT international roaming wi-fi if you’re not a BT broadband customer. The only caveat is that there’s a 3GB traffic cap per day, which is quite easily used up at HSDPA speeds.

  • From Francis Borg on Review of Italy and Switzerland trip

Hello, Read your review with interest but need to point some things out re Italy. We have a MH and we travel pretty much the same route as you do except that we now avoid Swizerland and meander via south of France into Itlay and down to the south in Calabria where we have a small house. Where I take issue with you is when you say “the south doesn’t really give you much to like. Interestingly, our database of sites/aires has a visible line from Rome on the west across to the east, with loads of stops above the line, and not many below it. This line does seem to tally with the areas we didn’t like. As mentioned in the diary, in hindsight we’d still visit the sites in the south as they are spectacular, but just route between them as fast as possible rather than try and linger and stumble on nice areas.”

I can assure you the west coast south of Naples is one of the most beutiful you can come across (as long as you stay off the MW) and if you venture inland into the mountains and the national parks you will be even more struck by the sheer wild nature of the area.
I am a member of the equivalent of our ramblers here and regularly go walking into the mountains and a lot of them are quite accessible by road. Visit our website at www.cai-verbicaro.org for a taster. The other thing you did not mention is the food and I don’t mean the pizzas… or even the restaurants, just roll into to a normal butcher , cheese place or fresh pasta place in any town and cook in your mhome . then you are visiting Italy..

We’re also making our way through Germany (close to the Austrian border ATM). How do you find launderettes in Germany? We’ve only seen a couple of places that do the laundry for you, but no self-service options. Our washing piles up until we visit the occasional campsite!

Thanks for your kind comments about our site – much appreciated! It will be populated with many more trips over the coming months – currently in Holland heading towards Denmark – so watch this space for regular updates.
I have also heard comments about the Milton type solution for tank cleaning, though I have also read the Milton solutions can attack stainless steel which could possibly affect plumbing and boiler components. I’ve nothing to back this up other than reading it on the internet but it is something you may want to consider.
Hope you have some good travels in the near future!

  • From Robin on Cleaning motorhome fresh water tank

I use Milton (or Tesco own brand equivalent) baby bottle cleanser. This is dilute sodium hypochlorite. I use about half a cup in the 90 litre tank, top up with water, leave for at least 12 hours, then empty and flush before filling up. If its safe enough for a baby its safe enough for me!
